The GOP needs a government shutdown to re-establish GUT-bone fides with the American people.
Republicans should allow President Obama to shut down the government on behalf of his Big Business and government employee friends to whom he has granted exemptions, subsidies and delays.
Soon after his first inaugural in 2009, President Barack Obama demanded that health care reform be passed quickly to ensure a robust recovery and balanced budget, and that it must be done in comprehensive way. Then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) insisted the Affordable Care Act should only be read to discover its specifics, after it became law. Having received zero Republican votes, Obamacare became the Law of the Land. Continue reading
Any Republican strategy to force Obama and the Democrats to compromise on Obamacare, taxes, spending or even the Keystone XL pipeline in a continuing budget resolution or bill to raise the debt ceiling inevitably leads to a Cruz-like government shutdown cul-de-sac.
Charles Krauthammer has known this since he worked for Vice President Walter Mondale in the late 1970s and when he watched President Reagan escape from government shutdown-showdowns with a Democratic congress unscathed in the 1980s.
For the past two weeks, as tea partier conservatives in congress led by Republican Senators Ted Cruz, Mike Lee and Marco Rubio have sought to de-fund Obamacare, we heard nary a word from any Fox News Special Report panel that the only “intelligent” course would obviously be to tie changes in the Affordable Care Act to a debt limit bill rather than a continuing budget resolution. No, we were told that Republicans “just can’t” win any battle that could lead to government shutdown because “Republicans don’t have the votes” in Congress and so can only hope to de-fund, repeal or amend the ACA by winning back the Senate in 2014 and the White House in 2016. For weeks, Charles Krauthammer has trashed the effort led by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) to defund Obamacare as a “cul-de-sac” strategy because it would inevitably end in a government shutdown-showdown, that Republicans “just can’t” win.
Yet, last night he endorsed the notion of conditioning a hike in the debt limit or a continuing budget resolution on either subjecting federal employees, including congressmen and their staffs, to Obamacare or in a delay of the individual mandate tax or both.
But if President Barack Obama would refuse to compromise and agree to either of Krauthammer’s conditions, where else would that strategy lead but to a cul-de-sac at the end of Government Shutdown Street?
The logical import of any Republican strategy that would always give in to Democrat demands for fear that the GOP “just can’t” win a government shutdown-showdown renders the House impotent as a participant in the separation of government power under the Constitution. Continue reading
Do the Constitution’s separation of powers and concomitant duty to compromise apply to all presidents save for President Obama?
Few things enrage this rooster more than to have our intelligence insulted by vacuous excuses for cowardice from those who know better, yet expect political allies to share their glazed-over looks and accept them as reasoned arguments. So it goes on Sunday political shows and The (Fox News, Special Report) Panel where usually reliable conservatives dismiss, out of hand, the notion that Republicans holding Article I’s power-of-the-purse could force the holder of mere Article II veto-power to compromise on Obamacare to prevent a government shutdown.
The best we can get out of Charles Krauthammer & Co. are combinations of the following: Continue reading
Our young above-it-all president knows best. He will never compromise on the signature achievement of his presidency. He will let the government down permanently if the Republican-adults-in-the-room-House doesn’t “save” us from him. Months will go by and eventually even Social Security checks won’t go out. There will be chaos in the land.
I’m for it.
For millions of us, the chaos is now five+ years old. We the People re-hired the president of Food Stamp Nation anyway. It is clear that there is no chance to restore the economy for at least three more years, when an adult President could be elected. It is clear that if Obamacare is allowed to plant roots for 2-3 more years, it will become a permanent entitlement that will prevent America from ever being exceptional again.
America’s only chance to be fixed is for more Americans to join those that are already part of the new poor-normal so that they can be motivated to fear more Democratic Party rule more than they do their current circumstance. Continue reading
The United States constitution is not self-executing. Sadly, in the Age of Obama it is more often honored in the breach. Republicans gain no ground pleading with Democrats to follow a Constitution they have long despised and whining about media bias as an excuse not to exercise its power of the purse.
Yesterday was the 226th anniversary of the signing of the world’s greatest and longest lasting governing document on September 17, 1787 at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. America prospers when majorities, as Martin Luther King dreamed, “…rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed.” That creed was originally stated in our first founding document, the Declaration of Independence, and probably best expressed by President Abraham Lincoln at Gettysburg as “…a new nation conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”
Our second founding document was the Articles of Confederation that sufficed for a people engaged in a Revolutionary War led by General George Washington; but the new nation that emerged from colonial shadows found that it needed Continue reading
Labor unions, public and private, have been as loyal as any faction of the Democratic Party; so it seemed a good omen for future repeal or de-funding when the Obamacare-supporting AFL-CIO lost 40,000 ILWU members over that support. But then we discover that the International Longshore and Warehouse Union are only upset that the Affordable Care Act doesn’t grant their particular union a tax-waiver and socialize health care in America more radically.
In an August 29 letter to AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, ILWU President Robert McEllrath cited quite a list of grievances as reasons for the dissolution of their affiliation, but prominent among them was the AFL-CIO’s support of Obamacare: Continue reading
What is the state of U.S. intelligence since President Obama succeeded President Bush in 2009?
Twelve years ago this morning Usama bin Laden’s al Qaeda carried out the deadliest attack against Americans on American soil since Americans turned on each other in the War Between the States. Thirty months ago, UBL was killed by U.S. Navy Seals in Pakistan. One year ago today, terrorists carried out the deadliest attack on a U.S. embassy since two were bombed in Africa in 1998.
