One correction and then I'll respond to the rest of the comment. This isn't me. I linked to the original writer. You may even recognize his picture if you go to the site. He's a good writer and a good man.

I've long eschewed organized churches, a great deal due to the fact of the absolutes. If you "don't do things the way we say then you're not Christian." It doesn't matter that what "they say" wasn't what Christ said or meant. I've gone my own road so long now that even the thought of going to church brings up all those bad memories although I do sometimes miss the fellowship. That fellowship is blunted by the absolutes, however, so I just continue doing my best to be my best for Christ's sake as well as my own soul.

Wow, this is a powerful topic. This is what Jesus meant when he said discipleship would divide mother from daughter, mother-in-law from son-in-law and divide families. It comes down to committment to Christ at the expense of everything else, and it is a terrible misuse of Christianity for pastors to use moral absolutes as a political tool to mislead the faithful and ruin the reputation of Christians in the world.

If a person wants to be a Christian, just be one! If you don't, start your own homemade church but don't call it Christian.

Pastors like the one who verbally assaulted you bear a heavy judgment. It's very scary and quite sad for that pastor. I don't think he understands the condemnation he's heaping on himself.
