Yes, I suppose I’m Anti-Huckabee.

I didn’t start out that way. In fact, looking at his website he seems just as viable as any other candidate in the Republican race. He looked so good “on paper” I was contemplating him as one of my first choices. However, his actions and words on the campaign trail don’t match with the website.

A couple of days ago, I published an article on my other blogging gig, Hang Right Politics, because of something Huckabee said that really scared me… not because of the issue he was addressing because I’m just as pro-Life as the next conservative, but because of the words he used when addressing the issue. As a result, some staunch Huckabee supporters attacked not only me but my fellow bloggers there when they tried to help clarify arguments. Thankfully they saved their worst words for me, such as closet lib, accused of supporting and possibly engaging in bestiality, an ACLU plant, and so on. It got to a point where I emailed my fellow bloggers and told them to give up because nobody was listening.

Words have power when they are uttered from a position of authority. I’m not the only one troubled by the words used to address the issue. Human Events, Reagan’s favorite newspaper, was troubled as well. Mr. Babbin probably summed it up much better than my poor attempt that seemed to garner so much ire.

Now, perhaps we can give Gov. Huckabee the benefit of the doubt and say he didn’t mean them the way they could be construed. However, my argument still stands that words uttered from a position of authority have power. Power can be abused, deliberately or in ignorance, and it would concern me greatly in either case. It opens a door to a path that could take us far away from the founding precepts of this nation.

In another episode, Huckabee called the Constitution a “living, breathing document” which is not so, not so. Now, what Huckabee doesn’t understand, or at least in my view doesn’t(or understands and doesn’t care which I can’t attest to without reading the man’s mind), is that to advocate such a stance once again opens a door to a path that would take us far away from the founding precepts of this nation.

It’s been pointed out since the furor erupted over this incident that it is not Huckabee’s only attack on the first amendment. And this: Anti-Fred Thompson Push Poll Call is lies in his support. The biggest problem with running as an evangelical candidate is being evangelical, which Huckabee is not, at least not by my definition. And the deeper one digs into the person of Huckabee, the less there is to trust.

So, yes, I suppose I am anti-Huckabee. Sorry about that but it takes more than a profession of faith to convince me.

Will vouch for you and certify that you are not a
    ‘closet lib’ :)

  2. Kathy Says:

The problem begins when Huck’s supporters conflate supporting him with fealty to their faith. It isn’t rational, and cannot be reasoned away.

I wish Fred had run a better campaign from the beginning then Huck and McCain would not even be in the running. I am a Romneyite as you know but Fred is right on policy. I would vote for Dr. Paul before that snake-oil preacher man,.

  4. hillbilly Says:

Thanks, BB. I know you will.

Kathy, I know. I took a whole day to decide whether to add anything else to that post on HRP and decided if they want to throw crap around they could do it here where there’s only me.

Goat, that’s a great answer!!! And totally worth thinking about. For all Paul’s nuttiness, he doesn’t want to rewrite the Constution. Huckabee went further than the statement on abortion.

I believe there are enough sensible people out there that won’t have to happen. Romney’s my second choice and I can even stomach voting for Rudy if necessary. Now, Rudy has some issues stances I will never ever agree with but I’m trusting their his own and his sheer stubbornness will keep him from bowing to low to the Dems.

Ditto everything you said! You took the words out of my “blog.” Hee-hee.

  6. hillbilly Says:

Well, Belle, it’s GMTA for sure.

    Link it in here!!!!

His point on the living breathing document is true in the way he explained it. He said that the constitution can be changed, therefore living. This, as opposite to the bible which is supposed to be the word of God and that shouldn’t be altered.

Huckabee’s proof lies in the many amendments that we have passed over the decades. Unlike say the 10 commendments that we don’t revise, even every century.

  8. Kathy Says:

Anonymous Coward, But Huck does alter the Ten Commandments:
Thou shalt not bear false witness against your neighbor unless you are in a political contest.

  9. hillbilly Says:

Kathy, you definitely have a point.

Is Tenn. part of super tuesday? I think Fredheads and Romneyites are much closer on policy than the others and if Fred does drop out you will find a welcome home in the Romney camp. I do not think he will endorse McCain but will stay neutral and let his supporters make up their own mind.

  11. hillbilly Says:

I don’t think he’ll endorse McCain, either. In fact, there’s no word that he’s dropping out, it’s mostly MSM speculation at this point. He has the funds to stay in until at least Super Tuesday and as far I know he’s on ballot in all those states. Yes, TN is part of Super Tuesday.

At this point, I doubt Fred has much of a chance for himself. I agree that Romney is closest to him in policies and if he endorses anyone I believe it would be Romney.

However, if Fred stays in he might do Romney more good even if it does take some votes away from him. The MSM is pushing hard for a McCain or Huckabee nomination… for the obvious reasons. As long as Fred is in he’ll remain the MSM’s target as the biggest threat to an easy Dem win.

The MSM started laying the groundwork to make Romney the next target to take down after the S.C. results came in.

Then again, miracles do happen. Fred could win the thing on his own in spite of “conventional wisdom.” All of the states who have caucused or had primaries allow Independents and/or Democrats to vote. McCain’s most solid support is among Independents rather than conservatives. Huckabee’s is among evangelicals because of identity politics. Florida and beyond is a whole different ballgame.

As long as Fred stays in, I’m backing him. If not him, I’m hoping for a Romney win. Heck, I could stomach Guiliani in spite of issues differences… at least he’s honest about those differences. But I will not vote for McCain or Huckabee.

  12. hillbilly Says:

Fred’s around here I believe unless he’s left for Florida. His mama is in hospital with pneumonia which is pretty serious given her age. We’ll just have to do a wait and see.

  13. Goat Says:

Prayers for his Mom for sure. All of them are on the ballot out here. Fred will win some delegates if he stays in and continues to be who we saw in the last debate but I really don’t think his heart is in it though he has made a great addition to the debate. .

  14. hillbilly Says:

I hope he’ll stay in because, at the very least, he has raised the level of discourse in the neverending debates. And like I said before, miracles do happen.

I’d like to see him win the nomination and take Romney on as VP. That would give Romney time to establish his conservative bonafides and continue advancing conservative principles. That’s my biggest problem with Romney. All his positions are relatively new as far as we know because his record doesn’t support those positions. It’s a matter of trust and given what we’ve had for the last two decades, trust is a big big issue this time around.

  15. Kathy Says:

You express my concerns exactly, Steph. I like the way Romney talks but don’t know about his record as governor of Taxachusetts. Seems like apples and oranges to me. What I do like about him is his economic principles and business acumen. His historic recovery of the Olympic games, his own success in business, his free market language.

But the rest of his platform concerns me that if you scratch the surface, you might find the construction is of entirely different material than the exterior.

I just don’t know. But the signs of an economic downturn are ominous. Perhaps that will give him an edge over the dems.

  16. hillbilly Says:

I know, Kathy. We have the same concerns. I guess tomorrow we’ll find out whether we are going any further with Fred. I will pray and hope for the best.
